Taking your little one to the dentist for the first time can feel like a bigger deal than it actually is. You’ve got questions. When should we go? Will they cry? Are we already behind? Deep breath. You’re doing fine. Dr. Danielle Wolfe at Parkside Dentistry sees kids every single day. Your child’s first dental visit is actually pretty low-key. Here’s exactly what you can expect, so you can walk in feeling prepared instead of anxious.

What To Expect At Your Child's First Dental Visit in St. Charles, MO

When Should We Go?

The American Dental Association says you should bring your child in by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth popping through. Whichever comes first.

We know that sounds early. But those baby teeth matter more than you think. They hold space for adult teeth, help with speech development, and affect how your child chews. Getting an early start also helps your little one get comfortable with our office before any real treatment is ever needed.

If your child is older and hasn’t been yet, that’s okay too. We don’t do shame here. We meet you where you are.

What Actually Happens During The Visit?

Here’s the short answer: not much. And that’s by design.

We keep the first visit short, sweet, and positive. The goal isn’t to do a ton of work. The goal is to build trust. Here’s what a typical first visit looks like:

How To Prepare At Home

You can do a few things to make the visit go even smoother:

What If They Cry?

They probably will. And that’s totally normal.

We don’t expect kids to be perfect little angels. We expect them to be kids. Sometimes they cry. Sometimes they wiggle. And sometimes they refuse to open their mouths at all. We roll with it. We’ve seen it all, and we never judge.

If the visit isn’t going well, we’ll slow down, take breaks, or reschedule for another day. No pressure. No force. We’re in this for the long game, building a positive relationship with the dentist that lasts a lifetime.
